Disclaimer and Contraindications for Breathwork
Contraindications
Active breathwork is a powerful healing modality and although usually a deeply relaxing and enjoyable process, it can result in certain specific physiological changes in the body and also intense physical and emotional release.
Please be aware that sessions can cause and are not limited to:
Tingling.
Dizziness.
Trembling, shaking or other physical sensations.
Emotional experiences.
Experience of energy moving through your body.
As a precaution, the following conditions are contraindicated for anyone thinking of practicing active breathwork:
Pregnancy first trimester
Detached retina or glaucoma
High blood pressure (not controlled with medication)
Cardiovascular disease including angina, previous heart attack or stroke.
Diagnosis of aneurysm in the brain or abdomen.
Uncontrolled thyroid conditions and diabetes.
Respiratory issues / asthma.
Epilepsy / seizures.
Prior diagnosis of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or previous psychiatric condition.
Hospitalisation for any psychiatric condition or emotional crisis within the last 10 years.
Any other medical, psychiatric or physical conditions which would impair or affect ability to engage in any activities that involve intense physical and/or emotional release.
It is crucial that you consult your healthcare provider before engaging in an active breathwork practice if you are unsure if it is a suitable practice for you.
Waive and release
It is each participant’s responsibility to look after their own physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. We are not medical practitioners. The Treehouse Community takes no responsibility for injury you may sustain as a result of participating in these sessions. By booking any of our sessions or participating in any self paced online course, workshops or being part of our Members Hub you accept the following waiver:
“I understand that if I am taking any medications or have any medical conditions such as, but not being limited to those contraindicated above, that I must advise the facilitator/s.
I certify that I have consulted a health professional regarding any condition physical, mental or emotional that could interfere with my judgment, or affect my health in any way during or after any and all session(s).
I understand and acknowledge that I am responsible for consulting my health care provider or doctor in case I have or suspect to be suffering from a health problem.
I understand and acknowledge that I am fully responsible for any and all risks, injuries, or damages, known or unknown, which might occur as a result of my participation and hereby waive and release The Treehouse Community from any claim, demand, cause of action of any kind resulting from or related to my participation in any programme or sessions.
It is with this understanding that I voluntarily accept this waiver.”
Unless you press complete on this page, representing your understanding and acceptance of this waiver, you are not permitted to continue with this course.
We are NOT medical doctors or a medical institution
Nothing from The Treehouse Community should be taken as medical advice. We may offer suggestions regarding physical and mental health — in the form of suggested exercises, daily practices, etc. — but such information is merely intended for educational and informational purposes, and we do not profess legitimate medical expertise.
Furthermore, no recommendations or suggestions (whether specific or generic) should be regarded as medical diagnosis or treatment. For qualified advice regarding medical questions, please consult medical professionals.
As with all physical activities, application of active breathwork and any related practices entails some degree of physical and mental risk. Be cognizant of your own capabilities and limits, both physical and mental, and act accordingly. If in doubt always consult with your healthcare practitioner before taking part in an active breathwork session.
Adhere to the following precept at all times: NEVER CONDUCT ACTIVE BREATHWORK ACTIVITIES IN PLACES WHERE LOSING CONSCIOUSNESS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS (e.g. in water, standing, whilst driving, operating heavy machinery, etc.).
Even if you are fit and healthy you might consider having someone present with you when you do our self paced course or online sessions if you are new to breathwork, especially if you are neurodivergent and prone to dizziness and your doctor has cleared you to participate. The gentle nasal breathing will be more appropriate in this case than open mouth connected breathing and you should choose a lying down position.
