Friendship Champions

Raising Allies for Autistic FOlk

Welcome to the “Friendship Champions” Program!

Empowering Young Hearts, Embracing All Differences

In memory of my dear friend Ryan who was bullied mercilessly by peers, misunderstood and unintentionally harmed by school staff, and punished time and time again for standing up for himself until he finally took his own life as a precious and innocent teenager.

At Friendship Champions, we believe every child deserves a friend who understands and values them. Our unique program is designed to teach children in classrooms how to be supportive and inclusive friends to their autistic peers, fostering a community where everyone thrives.

For years I have spent time in classrooms teaching little folk what autism is and how to be a good friend. Over a decade ago I wrote a book that has been used in classrooms to support this process. What I have found is that often bullying occurs because a child doesn’t understand something and once they do, wow! They nearly always want to help when they know how to. If we don’t give it a name and treat it with neutrality, then little folks can fear it.

Why Friendship Champions?

Building Bridges:

Autistic children often face challenges in social interactions. By equipping all students with the skills to be compassionate friends, we bridge gaps and create a more inclusive classroom environment.

Empathy and Understanding:

Our program teaches empathy through engaging activities and interactive lessons, helping children understand and appreciate different perspectives.

Skills for Life:

Friendship Champions not only enhances social skills but also builds a foundation of kindness and respect that students carry with them beyond the classroom.

What We Offer

Interactive Workshops:

Hands-on activities and role-playing exercises that bring concepts to life, making it easy for students to grasp and apply new social skills. Yes! It is often neurotypical children that need to learn the social skills not the other way around. It is important that children learn early on that autistic communication, play, and learning is valid communication even if it is different to the style they use and are used to. Autistic folks have to adjust many aspects of their life to fit into the neuro-normative systems of the neuro-majority; learning how to adjust in small ways to accommodate disabled folks is such a fantastic way to be a great ally.

Educational Resources:

Engaging materials, including videos, storybooks, and guides, that help explain autism in an age-appropriate and relatable way.

Support for Teachers:

Comprehensive lesson plans and training sessions for educators, ensuring a seamless integration of our program into your curriculum.

Parental Involvement:

Resources and tips for parents of neurotypical children to support their children’s learning and reinforce positive behaviours at home. Parents of neurodivergent children are encouraged to request that this program runs in their school.

Friendship Champions – Where Every Heart Finds a Friend

How to be a Good Friend to Your Autistic Peers

My friend Ryan’s story: Ryan’s smile was a sure-fire way to light up my day. His wit and philosophical nature had us in deep conversation every time we met. His kindness and the way his laughter rumbled through his whole body were testament to his beautiful spirit. Ryan was autistic. He had difficulty with communication sometimes and executive functioning (this meant he needed understanding and compassion at times). When he was bullied and multiple schools did not protect him, he finally took matters into his own hands and reacted to the bullies. This got him reprimanded by the school and police. What a cruel injustice. Feeling helpless, Ryan took his own life and his laughter disappeared by my world. I think about him every day. My promise to Ryan’s family was that I would create a program in his honour, to train Emotionally Intelligent peers to be Friend Champions.
